Wasps & hornets

Wasp, hornet and yellow jacket removal

By cabin owners, for cabin owners.

The deck, the hot tub and the porch swing are why guests book a cabin, and they are exactly where wasps like to build. We find the nests, remove them safely and treat the spots they keep coming back to, with same-week visits.

Safety first

Some nests are not a DIY job

A small paper wasp nest under the eave is one thing. Yellow jackets in a wall or in the ground by the steps are another. Spray the wrong hole and they can chew through to the inside, or pour out at whoever is closest. We bring the right gear and keep guests and kids clear while we work.

Wasps, hornets and yellow jackets around a cabin

Around Smoky Mountain cabins, three kinds cause most of the trouble.

Paper wasps: open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, deck rails, light fixtures and the lip of the hot tub cover.

Bald-faced hornets: black and white, with gray, football-shaped paper nests in trees and shrubs. Very protective of the nest.

Yellow jackets: nest in the ground and inside wall voids. Colonies grow all summer and are most aggressive in late summer.

Yellow jackets streaming in and out of a gap in a wall? Do not plug it, or they may find a way inside. Call us.

1

Keep guests and kids away.

Close off that part of the deck or yard, and let guests know before they head to the hot tub.

2

Do not spray into holes or walls.

Store sprays rarely reach the whole colony, and an angry nest is more dangerous than a quiet one.

3

Hold off on mowing near it.

A mower pass over a ground nest is a fast way to get stung. Mark the spot from a distance.

4

Snap a photo from a safe distance.

It tells us what kind of nest it is and what gear to bring.

Found a nest? Do this first

Most stings happen when someone bumps a nest they did not know was there. If anyone has a severe reaction to a sting, call 911.

Our process

How our nest removal works

Careful, quick and planned around the people staying at the cabin.

Inspect

Including the hidden ones in walls, soffits and the ground.

01

Protect the area

We keep guests, kids and pets clear and pick the right time of day for that nest.

02

Treat and remove

We treat the nest, applied as directed, and remove the ones we can safely reach.

03

Check back

Wasps like to rebuild in the same spots, so we check the eaves, rails and hot tub area again.

04

Log homes

Carpenter bees on log homes

Perfectly round holes about the width of a finger in your logs, fascia or deck rails, with sawdust underneath, mean carpenter bees. They do not eat wood, but they tunnel in to nest and come back to the same boards year after year.

Most active in spring, when you see them hovering by the eaves

Bare, weathered wood draws them more than painted or stained wood

Old holes should be treated, then sealed so new bees cannot reuse them

Own a rental cabin?

Wasps on the deck and holes in the logs both end up in guest photos. Our cabin service schedules these checks around your bookings.

Called on a Tuesday about wasps under the deck rail and they were out the next morning. Gone, and they have not come back.

We rent our cabin out most weekends. They worked around the booking calendar and sent photos after, so I knew exactly what was done.

Quoted a flat price up front and that is what I paid. Polite, quick, and they explained what they were spraying and why.

FAQ

Wasp and hornet questions

Still not sure what to do? Call 865-500-0571 and talk it through with us.

  • Late summer and early fall. Colonies are at their largest and most defensive then, so ground and wall nests are most likely to cause stings, often when someone mows or steps near the entrance.

  • We do not recommend it for yellow jacket nests in the ground or in walls, or for large hornet nests in trees. Those colonies can be big and defensive, and store sprays rarely reach the whole nest. Keep people away and call us instead.

  • We offer same-week visits and work around your booking calendar whenever we can. Tell us your check-out and check-in times when you call 865-307-7539, and keep guests away from the hot tub area until the nest is handled.

  • Paper wasps often rebuild in the same sheltered spots, like eaves, deck rails and light fixtures. Knocking down small nests in spring, sealing gaps into walls and having us check those spots later in the season all help.
